George Grossomanides

George Grossomanides has been an Otis Library advocate for more than 10 years.  If you ask him about the Library, he smiles and enthusiastically begins to rattle off a long list of programs and services offered onsite, offsite, and online.  He channels BIG LIBRARY energy because he understands how we help people. George is also committed to helping people.  George is an active member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA).  AHEPA is a Greek men’s fraternity that began in 1922.  The Norwich chapter began in 1926.  AHEPA promotes the ancient Hellenic ideals of education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, family and individual excellence through community service and volunteerism.  When asked what surprised him about Otis Library, George’s response was spirited.  He said, “Surprised me? I would rather say what impresses me? I can’t believe the outreach that you folks do.  You connect to so many other organizations and initiatives.  You are not just books as so many think! Your commitment to helping immigrants and citizenship and language is so important.  You are the epitome of lifelong learning.”

When George’s grandfather came to this country in 1915, he didn’t speak English but had a desire to succeed. He met George’s grandmother and they married in Norwich.  George has built his life in this area.  He worked at Foxwoods for 27 years.  Now that George is semi-retired, he often spends time with his two grandsons.  George is committed to making things a bit better in his community through his work with his church, Holy Trinity in Norwich, and AHEPA.

AHEPA has been a Library supporter for many years.  Their contributions have helped make Otis Library a welcoming and inviting space to all.  They have assisted with our citizenship classes, helped us purchase new materials, and have sponsored special events.
